$100 into an affiliate program

One hundred dollars. February 21, 2024. That is the entire entry fee for the worst financial year of my adult life.

The program was run by a big name I respected, and I am not going to name him. This is not a callout and the lesson does not need a defendant. If anything the lesson is worse without one.

I went in the way I go into everything. Funnels. Video sales letters. Bonus stacks. Cold email sequences, landing pages, the whole machine, built properly, over hundreds of hours across months.

Then the offer changed.

Then it changed again.

You cannot build a conversion machine on top of a product that keeps becoming a different product. Every change resets every asset you own — the hook, the promise, the objections you spent weeks learning to handle. I rebuilt, and rebuilt, and by the third version I was maintaining a museum.

The numbers at the end were thousands of leads and zero conversions. I want to be exact about that, because it did not work out is the phrase people hide inside. Thousands of leads. Zero.

The real mistake was upstream of all of it. I had bet an entire year on somebody else's offer, and an affiliate builds the machine while renting the engine. When the engine gets swapped mid-run, the machine is scrap and the person who swapped it does not owe you a thing.

There is one thing I carried out of that year, and at the time I did not even register it. I used AI for the first time in that build, to write funnel copy. Incidental, unglamorous, a shortcut on a bad project. The tool that would eventually rebuild my entire life first showed up as a way to get through page four faster.

$100 in. A year out. The receipt was worth more than the offer ever was.
