June 12, 2018. I was back at my parents' house with a lawsuit behind me, no money, and a quiet, reasonable pressure in the air to go get a real job.

Instead I opened Upwork and took their internet marketing test.

Forty minutes allowed. I finished in eleven. First place out of 97,511 freelancers.

Not top one percent. Not well-ranked. First, out of ninety-seven thousand five hundred and eleven people who do this for a living.

I want to be honest about what that was worth. It paid nothing. It did not put a client on the phone, it did not clear the debt, and nobody at that kitchen table was impressed by a number on a freelancing site.

But it answered the only question I actually had left, which was whether the last two years had taken the thing I am good at. Maybe I was not the best internet marketer in the world yet. That screen said I could be. When you have been told in every possible way that you are finished, a scoreboard that disagrees with the room is worth more than a paycheck.

Now the part that gets edited out of stories like this one.

Nothing happened. The ranking sat there. My first contract did not land until February 27, 2019 — more than eight months later — and the months after that were thin enough that I questioned the whole plan more than once. A ranking is not a pipeline. Proof of skill and proof of demand are two different documents.

It took reviews. Delivered work, one job at a time, until the profile carried enough weight to sell for me instead of the other way around. Once that stack was tall enough, that account eventually did around $200K in freelance work and carried me through the years I had nothing else.

The test took eleven minutes. The proof took two years. Everything I have ever built has run on that ratio.
